The truth about SEO

Before starting this post, I googled the title. I got sooooooooooooooo many results!! It seems like we all want to be on the first page of google’s searches. There are many companies taking advantage of this, and as I’ve been working on this, I feel quite responsible about making people aware of what’s true, and what’s not.

Let’s face it: if you have an awful site, even if you apply all SEO techniques, you are not going anywhere. Adding tags, keywords, alts to the images, etc, won’t make your site go from 5000 to 1 in the ranking.

Google’s advice about SEO is “program pages for people, not for search engines”. If visitors like your page, they will be back, they will bookamark it, they will share it with friends. And this is what makes your page more popular and more likely to be number one.

There is a lot of work to do to get a better ranking in Google.

  • Choose your keywords carefully. What’s a keyword? A word which has a high density (appears several times) in your web page.
  • Make a useful and simple design. No-one wants to visit a page completely crowded or with a fuchsia background.
  • Update your pages constantly. Search engines don’t like old content, so keep your page up-to-date.
  • Just getting traffic is not enough. You have to make sure that your users get interested in your site. Otherwise, they won’t be back.
  • Research about what people is searching for. Even if you are number one on “Pink Spoons” search, maybe no-one is searching for pink spoons!!
  • Generate unique content related to your product.

This is not the path to success, but it’s a list of useful things which will help you to achieve your goal of a better ranking in Google.

Are all SEO companies a lie? No! There are lots of good companies out there which will help you. But there is no magic, is all about hard work. Good luck in your SEO path.
